Your Call

We do a lot of self-scouting at the International Offices of Blackened Out Media, L.L.C., and one thing we have noticed is that we tend to talk about some of the same places over and over again. We aim to be an informative and entertaining source for everything which New Orleans offers to eat and drink, and the last thing we want to become is a predictable form of communication. There is a lot of great food out there in this region, but some of it just isn't on our radar.

And that is where you come in. With over 1000 independently owned restaurants in the area and only 2 of us on the Blackened Out payroll (er, Tax Evasion/Ponzi scheme), we are relying on you to inform of us of all the great places that we are missing out in. Be it a po-boy joint you love, a sushi bar you crave, a neighborhood grocery store, or just a bar with a great jukebox. Leave a comment below (you can remain Anon if you like), shoot us an email, or touch us via Twitter.

Please make sure to include your favorite dishes on the menu as well as any tips on dining at your recommendation. Nothing is off limits, wines, restaurants, cooking techniques, bars, products, etc... We will try to make it to every recommendation that is made, and every Wednesday we will write about where we have been based on your suggestions.

And Donnie Boy, we don't need to go to, nor does anyone want to read about, P&G.

Help us, help you. It is your call.

Coops Place on Decatur in the Quarter: dive bar with GREAT FRIED CHICKEN! We ate there twice last time we were in town.

$1 beers at the Shrine on Airline on Thursdays. Best deal in town, especially with the weather as nice as it is now.

Ciro's Cote Sud
Il Posto
Fried Oysters smeared with pate at Luke
Le Foret

So far so good, keep em coming.

Shelly, we reviewed Ciro's last summer for offBEAT and Le Foret in January (hint: Le Foret kicks ass). But still we could stand to revisit your other choices.

I am in Il Posto about once a week and love the joint. Just dont want to write about it and ruin the secret!

I hit up Avenue Pub on Monday. I had the Redfish Sammich, but tried someone else's St. Chuck Duck. Expect a full report soon.

Cafe 615 (Da Wabbit) in Gretna. Eggplant Napoleon appetizer and Soft Shell Crab Orleans entree.

I know I sound like a broken record, P6, but Casa Garcia... Make it a point to get out in Kenna, Bra for lunch one day and we can hit it up! Their chicken chimmy is the best, not to mention the complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip they start you out with.

Italian: perhaps a comparison of all 3--Del Posto in Covington, Da Piero in Rivertown & Tony Angelo's in LV

Spanish/Mexican: Have y'all done El Gato Negro? La Carretta on the NS was solid during a recent visit. There's a new Honduran place next to C's pharmacy on Vets that was great on 2 separate occasions (yes, I forgot the name). Also, I've heard of a new joint on West End that serves authentic food(second-hand info tho).

Sandwiches: hard category to offer a road less traveled, but here goes--Radosta's (esp. their house made hot sausage & shrimp parmesan po-boys), 2nd Cake Cafe & their crab, bacon & brie on housemade challah or their b-fast bagel, I find Martin's burger to surpass the majority (and fwiw the specials are a steal too).

That's a start...

Squeal Barbecue on Oak. Ask if they have fried collard greens.....
Pork nachos are great, as are the ribs.
Great beer selection.

J'Anita's on the Avenue. It's gastropub food in the Avenue Pub at St. Charles and Polymnia.

Have: Guacamole, Duck Sandwiches, Budda's Temptation, Sweet Spot Burger, soups other than Gumbo.

Avoid: Best Damn Fish Sandwich
Have: Best Damn Chicken Sandwich, Beach Sandwich.

Jones,

Someone else recommended the Mexican place in West End (same location as the old Ground Pati). It's close to home, so I will try it soon.

Anon,

I went to Squeal a few months back and thought that the chicken and pork were average. I am waiting on a return trip for ribs, nachos, and greens before I pass judgment.

Mexican place on Lake Marina Drive is Salsas Por El Lago. The lady and I went recently and were pleasantly surprised. Salsa was very fresh and the Mexican fare was quite good. Unlike most restaurants of this nature, there are no free chips and salsa.
