When in doubt, order pizza. When too lazy to cook and too exhausted to go out, order pizza. When hungover and can't leave the couch, order pizza. When ____, order pizza.

For the above reasons and many others, pizza too often gets a bad rap as "garbage food." But eventhough NOLA may not have the same pizza tradtion as New York and Chicago, we still have several local pie shops that put out a pretty good slice.

The two above came from the ovens at Slice Pizzeria on St. Charles. Both the pepperoni on the left and the "white pie" on the right had a crispy crust and a restrained amount of cheese (which happen to be my personal preference). But the best part is that you are looking at a $6 lunch. If you like to cut your carbs with a little vegetation, Slice is running their COOLinary lunch special through the end of the month - any small salad, a slice with 2 toppings of your choice, and a scoop of Brocato's gelato for $9.99.

With football season in full swing, we are eating more pizza now than at any other time of the year. In today's poll, tell us what is your favorite place to grab a slice. As always, if your preferred pizzeria is absent from the ballot (or if you are like Rene and prefer to bake your own), please enlighten us in the comments.

Mr. Topher and I spent our college years slaving in Mark Twain's and Italian Pie respectively. How either of those made the list, and at this time, Twain's getting 2 votes is beyond me. When a pizza comes out the Twain oven, the cook has to use paper towels to soak up all the grease before the pie makes it to you. That's weird.

Another Slice location will be opening next to Whole Foods on Magazine where the Italian Pie was.

I can't vote for the Dough Bowl if you don't have it on the list!

I think Slice is my favorite in NOLA. I like to get goat cheese and spinach on mine. It is divine. I am curious about the Theo's opening on Carrollton b/c that will be closer to my house than Slice and I can also get spinach and goat cheese there. Have you tried Theo's?
As for other local pizza, I do like Reginelli's quatro (4 cheese) pizza b/c they have gorgonzola as one of the cheeses. *Drool*

Allow me to rationalize Peter's exclusion of the Dough Bowl. For many years, before he ran into International Celebutantes on Thursday Nights, Peter spent most every Tuesday (and Fri. and Sat. in summer) at the Boot sliding a $5 roll of quarters across the bar and ordering 10 Jack and Cokes. Following this feast he would amble over to what was then Dino's, order 2 slices of pepperoni and wait on the Pope to stop doing the Crypt walk to Back that Ass up before heading home to play cards and gamble.

I think he feels betrayed he cant do that anymore so he takes it out on the Dough Bowl.

Angeli on Decatur. They have a light fresh dough very similar to Mellow Mushroom's. Interesting place too.

Not what you would expect from bar food, but the Balcony has excellent pizza. I say "excellent" but I may have been too drunk to properly judge, so I challenge someone to go there sober and let me know if I right.

Hey didn't those Eating in Nola people right about Slice recently?

You guys need to get some original material.

If a place is good, everyone should be WRITING about it.....right?

Slice is my favorite too, although be warned that if you get a salad to go, it'll most likely be 5-7 leaves in a styrafoam container. My only complaint.

Celeste - Rene is right: it will always be Dino's to me. I don't think that I can eat there again unless it's preceeded by 50ct night, but when I do I will make sure to write about it.

Shelly - I have not been to Theo's in quite a long time but will probably hit up the Canal St. location soon as it's fairly close to home.

Brady - My apologies for leaving off Roman's and thanks for the reminder because I need to get there soon.

Dough Bowl would be my choice if it were on the list

I really want to try Pappa's Pizza on Elysian Fields and Robert E Lee. I'm pretty sure it's just another one of those Vietnamese places that just happens to server pizza in addition to the standard luncheon meat fried rice and bland pasta.

Another vote here for Romans.

No way Doughbowl. Drunk, it's great, but have you ever had it sober? Even before the new owners had it, it was awful sober.

Dough Bowl is good pizza, picnic table next to dumpster is bad al fresco dining, can't go in Boot for fear of head exploding during collapse of time/space continuum, plus kids think it stinks inside.

What's up with all the love for Theo's? I kinda like the restaurant, I just don't get pizza when I am there.

Superdeformed reminds me of an excellent Egyptian place on El Camino Real in Silicon Valley that was in a strip mall. Had the uncommon name of "Pizza & More". I can never even THINK of that place with a straight face.

The most under-appreciated pizza in the city is from Cafe Nino on Carrolton. Nino grew up making pizzas in New York and continues that style down here. Unfortunately the pizza does not hold well under the heat lamp, so unless you get there when its coming out of the oven its not very good. But if you order a fresh pizza and get a cup of his sauce to dip it in there is nothing better in the city.
